I’ve only got three legs – so what ?

Pictured above is “Ella” a lovely sweet-natured 5 month old puppy who was wandering the streets of Gouves all day, every day until she was brought to our attention by Joost, a Dutchman who is working in Gouves and who has connections with the Mirtos Animal Project in Holland. She only had three legs, two thirds of the fourth leg having been amputated.

We agreed to help by fostering her and to watch her play, you couldn’t believe that she only had three legs! However, after being in her foster home for a week, it was evident that the remains of her fourth leg were causing her pain. The muscles and nerves were still intact and when she sat or laid down in a certain way she would scream in pain.

We decided that it would be better to have the remains of the leg removed since it was of no use to her whatsoever and would mean a pain-free future for her. Our vet performed the operation and she is pictured (above right) back in her foster home. She eventually flew out to Holland and a family came to see her in her temporary foster home. As the family were sitting and talking, Ella jumped up onto the couch next to the husband and laid her head in his lap. Needless to say they fell in love with her and this gentle, playful, lovable puppy found her new home.
